What sports are offered at ISS?

The Athletic Department at ISS is striving to get as many students to enjoy physical activity at practice and compete against local and international teams. Along with the mission specific sports are involved we have many other activities that get offered by our CAS students and cooperating teachers. Keep your eyes on the daily announcements to see what they have to offer.

As for the Athletic Department here are the following activities and sports we offer:

              Fourth/Fifth Grade Volleyball (Fall)

K-Fifth Grade Track and Field (Spring)

              Middle School and High School

              Swimming

              SPRING Season

              Track and Field
              Rugby

What are the age limits for the teams?

ISS fields many teams with different ages. Some teams are called Varsity and JV, other teams may be distinguished by the age level appropriate for that league (i.e. U14, U15, U16, or U19).

The age guideline cut-off date is September 1 of the current school year. No student who has reached the age of 19 as of September 1 is eligible to compete in NECIS tournaments.

A varsity team is defined as constituted of the strongest group of players from ISS. A junior varsity team is defined as constituted of the second strongest group of players. Students are encouraged to try out for any team and not to worry about their placement on a specific roster. The coaches and athletic directors will make the decision on where students are placed according to age, attitude, conduct, co-operation, effort, performance and scholarship. Generally speaking the Varsity team is made up of 10th, 11th and 12th Graders and the Junior Varsity teams are made up of 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th graders. In some cases with discussion between the coach, athletic director, parents and student, an athlete may be moved up or down to accommodate for their ability and teams necessities.

              Intent to Compete Explanation

There are many costs that are incurred by the Athletic Department throughout the year. The money is spent on the following items. Fees that are directly associated with the local league are administration fees (licenses need to be registered and paid for to play in leagues), league and tournament fees (entering teams in tournaments and age specific leagues) and referee fees per home competitions. The money is also used to cover  bus transportation (buses will be ordered for games located out of the Stavanger, Sandnes or Sola area AND swimming transport to Randaberg Svømmehallen for practices) and facility rentals (Randaberg Svømmehallen).

For the school year of 2010/2011
the registration fee per athlete for each season of sport will be as follows:

Athletes Competition in first season:        600 NOK
Athletes Competition in a second season:    400 NOK
Athletes Competition in a third season:    200 NOK

              For example...
If a student participates in the first season (Fall), the family will be issued a bill for 600 NOK; if that same student participates in the second season (Winter), the family will be issued a bill for 400 NOK; and if the student participates in a third season (Spring), the family will be issued a bill for 200 NOK.

The student MAY NOT compete in any competitions during that season until this form has been handed in to the Athletic Department. Bills will be issued close to the beginning of the season, once the “Intent to Compete” form has been handed in and regardless of injury or other circumstances the family is 100% responsible for the fee.

Dedicating yourself to your team for the season is a large responsibility; all expectations are stated in the Extra Curricular Activities Code of Conduct. Failure to adhere to any of these rules and responsibilities can affect my participation in any competitions during my season.

              Specifics for "ITC" for Volleyball
The "Intent to Compete" is to be turned in by all athletes in the case of that athlete being chosen for VestCup team or any other teams competing in local competitions. Athletes will not be charged unless their name is given to the athletic department by the coaches. The coaches will turn in the roster for the team one (1) week prior to the event and those students will be charged for their "first" season.

Therefore, if your student is not chosen to participate in any local tournaments, for volleyball only, they will not be charged the participation cost.

Uniform Care - Washing Your Sports Clothes

              Picture
              1. Sweaty and stinky clothes should be washed as soon as possible. If soon is not an option, hang them up to dry instead of throwing in a hamper.
              2. For smells and general mildew, add ½ to 1 cup of vinegar to your wash. You can also pre-soak with vinegar, and then wash regularly.
              3. Use a gentle detergent. Or try a special laundry detergent designed specifically for performance clothes.
              4. Don't use fabric softeners on performance fabrics-they compromise the wicking power of your clothes.
              5. Always HANG TO DRY. Do not put them in the dryer!
              6. Resist the urge to wear your workout clothes more than once. You're just asking for a rash.
              7. Sweat stains are tough to eliminate, especially on light-colors. Keep your eye on your shirts' armpits and at the first sign of stains, pre-treat with vinegar or a stain-removal product before washing. Also, let your antiperspirant or deodorant completely dry before putting on your clothes.

What about my student-athlete that plays for a local club?

The official answer from the Football,  Volleyball and Basketball leagues of Norway have stated that a players can NOT be register in a local club and play for ISS during league games or local tournaments. This Student-athlete may train with the ISS team and go to NECIS conference, but CAN NOT play in any game registered with the sports organized league unless the player is transferred from their club to ISS.

If your student-athlete would like to change clubs and be part of ISS Vikings, a conversation needs to happen between the parents, student-athlete, coach and athletic directors as soon as possible.
