Coach Næss is in his 14th year at ISS. Over the years he has taught various subjects in the Middle School and has been a K-8 Norwegian teacher. During the last 8 years he has taught history and, at times, Theory of Knowledge in the High School. During the first semester he is one of three advisors in the Model United Nations program. A Norwegian citizen, Coach Næss graduated from the University of Oslo as a “lektor” (7.5 years University and teaching degree).
Track and field has been Hans Christian Næss’ passion since he was in Middle School. From the age of fourteen, he has competed mainly in running events and has specialized in middle distances in his late teens. Licensed as a coach, he took over the Oslo University Team and coached them for three years. He has been the head coach of the ISS Vikings for six seasons.
Holly Uber- Assistant Coach
Coach Uber is looking forward to helping with track and field this season. Holly started running in middle school and continued all the way though college. She participated in both Cross-Country and Track focusing on the distance races. Holly was accepted to Wright State University and received a scholarship to run Cross-Country in their division I program. Holly received her Bachelors of Science in Biology from Wright State University. She joined the Peace Coprs, working as a volunteer agricultural extension agent in Cameroon for two years. While in Cameroon she helped out at the school and found a love for teaching. After completing her work for the Peace Coprs she returned to the states and enrolled in a Master of Arts in Teaching at the University of Pittsburgh. After teaching for several years at variety of levels in the US Holly is happy to be teaching and coaching at ISS.
Nick Bircham - Assistant Coach
Nick Birchem graduated from Concordia College – Moorhead, Minnesota with majors in physical education and health education. He also earned a coaching minor. Coach Birchem participated in many athletics growing up in Lisbon, North Dakota. Baseball, American Football, and Track & Field became his main sports. Coach Birchem continued to participate in American Football and Track & Field at the college level. At Concordia College Birchem was a captain of the Track & Field team. His three events were the shot put, discus, and javelin. Birchem was named outstanding field athlete three years in a row. Coach Birchem has spent two summers coaching Track & Field to 5-12 year olds, and is looking forward to coaching at the International School of Stavanger.
Coach Wallace has been a teacher of Physical Education and Health Education at ISS for 13 years. She is also the Middle School Principal. Carol has a Bachelor of Education Honors Degree in Physical Education, Health Education and Exercise Physiology and a Master’s Degree in International Education and Educational Management from Oxford Brookes University, UK. She has been the Head Track and Swim Coach at ISS and has also coached basketball, netball, field hockey and dance at other schools.
Carol has been Scottish Cross-Country champion for three years’ in a row. She has also been Scottish and British Pentathlon Champion (hurdles, high jump, long jump, shot putt and 800/200m). She has been a member of the UK junior track team and competed in international competitions. In those competitions, her main events were 400m hurdles and pentathlon. In addition, she has competed for her University in swimming, dance, field hockey and netball. Her hobbies include: running, yoga, skiing, reading, cycling and dance.
Carol is a US and UK citizen and has lived in Norway for 13 years. She is married to Wim Keereman (8th grade teacher at ISS) and has an eight-year old step-son named Andreas.
Coach Duevel has assisted with track for many years, with a focus on long jump in the last few years. Len has a BS from Moorhead State University, EdM from Harvard University and a PhD from Purdue University. None of the degrees are in sports, but coaching has been an on-going way of getting to know students in their life outside the academic world. Len taught Primary and Middle School students for 32 years before taking the role of principal in 2005. Len has coached basketball at the junior varsity and varsity levels. Len is the husband of Dr. Linda Duevel, Director of ISS. He is the father of two children who are now working on bachelor and master’s degree programs, and they also participated in track when they attended ISS.
Coach Janiak is in her fourth year teaching 2nd grade at ISS. Courtney participated in both Cross-Country running and Track and Field throughout High School. Her events included the 1600m race walk, 800m and occasionally the 4x800m relay. Courtney is a graduate of Plymouth State University in Plymouth, New Hampshire with a Bachelor of Science in Childhood Education and a minor in Special Education. Courtney has worked for the past two seasons with the Middle School and High School Track team which she greatly enjoyed. This season she will be focusing on the Primary Track program which she has been working with since arriving at ISS in 2007. This will be her second year running the Primary Track program.
